How to Buy a Suit

How to buy a suit, is the question of the day for many men trying to purchase a suit for the first time. Of course it really isn't that hard to go to the store, give them your credit card and leave with a suit. However, I'm sure anybody spending hundreds of dollars would like to know what he's buying first.

One of the main points of this website is to make you an informed buyer. This section along with, how to wear a suit, should give you all you need to make a proper purchase.

Lets get started.

The first thing you absolutely need to do is to get your suit measurements.

Suit Measurements

Taking good suit measurements is vital to getting a suit that fits. Going to a local store can be a good starting place if your willing to listen to a sales pitch. However, if you want to save yourself a trip to the store, and I know you do, then you've come to the right place.

Items you will need:

1. 1 cloth measuring tape.
2. 1 competent friend.
3. 1 sheet of paper
4. 1 pen

I imagine you have all of these instruments with the exception of the cloth measuring tape. The best thing to do about this is to have the friend that you call to come over and help you pick one up on his/her way over. These can be purchased at places like Wal-Mart for a few dollars, so you shouldn't have too much trouble.

Steps to getting your suit measurements:

Jacket - Put your arms out to your sides and have your partner wrap the tape around your chest, just over top the nipples. Make sure that the inches side is facing out. The number you get here is your jacket size. Write it down. Next you will want to get your sleeve size by measuring from yo

Pants - Wrap the tape around your waist, making sure you have the inches side facing out. This is your waist measurement. Next take the tape from your crotch all the way down to your ankle. The number you get here is known as your inseam.

If you feel uncomfortable with somebody around your crotch you can always measure from your waist down to your ankles and subtract 11 inches.

While you have somebody over you might as well get your shirt measurements.

Shirt - Start by measuring the circumference of your neck. This number will determine what shirt collar you will buy. Next you will want to get your sleeve size by measuring from your shoulder to about a quarter inch past your wrist. The reason for this is because you want part of your shirt to show when you have your suit jacket on.

The last thing you need to do is pay your friend back for buying the cloth tape measurer. Getting your suit measurements has never been easier.

Getting measured will tell you whether or not you need to check out slim suits or big and tall mens suits.

After you have your measurements come back to this page and we'll take it to the next level.

Now that you have your measurements take a look at some of the different parts of a suit, suit patterns, and suit styles.

Now that you know how to buy a suit, the only places left to go before we go shopping are measuring the suit and how to wear a suit. This page will help you out greatly if you plan on buying a suit at a consignment shop or a yard sale.

If you plan to buy your suit online or at a store then you can disregard this and go straight to the shopping for suits section. This section will give you tips on what to do when your in the store or searching online.
