Dress Up Clothes

"Accessories are the spice of life."
- John Varvinni

Wearing accessories with your dress up clothes has never been easier. Everyone should know by now that good suits will need to be accompanied with dress shirts, ties, shoes, and socks. A poorly put together outfit can make even the most expensive suit look terrible. Conversely a person can take a suit that cost them next to nothing and make it look fabulous.

The Pocket Square

The pocket square is a pocket handkerchief used for purely decorative purposes. It began life as a small square of material used for wiping one's nose, probably during the middle ages in England. The material from which they are made could vary according to their powers of absorption and the wealth of the owner, the more prosperous using silk.

They have been used for various purposes throughout their life ranging from the knotted handkerchief head protector favored by British holidaymakers to accompany their suspenders and rolled up trousers, to the white handkerchief signaling a surrender, to the placing of one on a judge's head during British rule in Hong Kong when passing the death sentence. However the simple use of the pocket handkerchief in modern times is purely decorative.

Tissue paper is nowadays used in preference to the handkerchief for hygiene purposes. This came about purely by accident when it was discovered that facial tissues were being used in place of the handkerchief.

When utilized for decorative purposes there are various ways of folding a handkerchief to place in the breast pocket of men's suits. Each method produces a different effect which can be chosen to match the occasion.

Folds are given flamboyant names such as the presidential, the one, two, three or four point folds and the puff. Each are designed to look different when placed in the top pocket.

It is very rare to wear a square in a business environment, due to the fact that it creates an informal impression. It is certainly the case that they are more often displayed at social events. However if worn to a board meeting, the more subtle and discreet square would be appropriate.

Never wear your pocket square or handkerchief hanging from the back pocket of your jeans by the way. The reason? It's used as a code within the gay community and the exact way its worn and the color indicates your preference.

Men's suits all require some accessories whether its simply the tie-pin or a cummerbund. The pocket square can be fashioned into an accessory to complement any suit or function.

Smart Money Clips:

Smart money clips should be called genius money clips. I don't know why it took so long but finally they have created a money clip with two sides.

Keeping your suit pants thin with a wallet, cell phone, and set of keys can be difficult. This bright invention is compact, lightweight, and will take some of the burden off removing keys from your keyring.

This little invention is spring loaded and can hold up to thirty bills and five credit cards. I like to keep my cell phone on the left side and my keyring and clip on the right side. This keeps my cell from getting scratched from either of the other two. I highly recommend you put your keys back on your keyring and get this clip.

Mens Trench Coats:

Mens trench coats can be seen all over in the winter months. The man in the suit has been relying on this type of garment for ages. Wear these over your suits if you need added warmth and protection against the cold for you legs.

Another added benefit can be for the slimming effect this jacket can have on a person. If you have a thick build or are short and stocky buy this before even looking at a pea coat.

Quick Tips

1. Buy a neutral color that matches most of your suits.

2. Choose a wool material that is soft and fully lined inside.

3. Get one with as many pockets as possible; you can never have too many pockets.

4. Do not buy one without a tie around waste.

5. Coats with a double collar on each side are great.

Mens Pea Coats:

Mens Pea Coats are ideal for wearing with suits. This garment can be described as both warm and comfortable. Buy this jacket if you are skinny and do not want to accent it with a trench.

Another reason a person might want to buy this over a trench is because it is less restrictive at the knees and great for movement. Also a person can sit down with one of these without ever having to take it off.

Quick Tips

1. The material chosen should always be wool for maximum comfort and warmth.

2. Choose a neutral color that can be worn with the majority of your suits and you won't have to buy multiples.

3. Find one with thick inner lining and multiple pockets.

Mens Colognes:

Mens colognes are not an absolute necessity for your suit, but neither is salt for your soup. Colgnes add a much needed spice to a man and should not be overlooked.

A word of caution, do not wear a fragrance with your business suit or interview suit. An added bit of pleasant aroma is great in most cases but not at the office.

Old Spice and other such concoctions are viewed as unprofessional and should only be worn with your formal and casual party suits.

Quick Tips

1. Buy a scent that is pleasing to your sense of smell but not overpowering.

2. Also make sure you don't put too much on.

3. Never spray directly onto your clothes.

The Tie Clip:

The silver tie clip and the gold one are your two main options. Like always, choose the color that goes best with your skin and the color of the shirt and suit.

Gold goes best with darker complexions and silver goes better with light complexions. Also remember to match the color of your belt head, watch, and cufflinks to your neck piece.

When buying new items for your wardrobe keep in mind that these are low on the priority list. The popularity of this neck wear fastener has dramatically declined over the last few years and will probably die out completely in the near future. A major reason for this is because they can appear flashy at times and really aren't all that useful in non-windy conditions.

Mens Cufflinks

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mens cufflinks are some of the most underrated pieces of mens fashion on the market today. A small piece of metal connecting the end of the sleeve together might not seem like much but it really makes a difference. The cufflink is like the dot on the top of the i - just one of those details that should not be overlooked. After all an i without a dot looks like an l and we all know what word starts with l.

Alright so you might not be a loser if you use buttons to fasten your sleeve, but you should know how to buy them anyway.

Look for a color that matches your skin color and your shirt. Your options for color are limited to silver and gold so it shouldn't be too hard for you.

If you're feeling extra fancy than go for engraved cufflinks.

Stylish Mens Watches:

Stylish mens watches are great augments to your suit. The mens watch - jewelry that is both functional and attractive. I won't go into all the different brands there are because there are just too many. However, here are some things to consider when choosing your timepiece.

1. Choose a color that goes well with the color of your skin. Gold goes well with darker pigments and silver goes well with lighter complexions. If you're somewhere in between, feel free to pick up a two toned color.

2. Find a head that matches the size of your wrist. If you have small wrists a large watch will look more like a clock.

3. Buy a name brand - not a knock off. If you're trying to be frugal you can always buy last years model at a great discount

Designer Mens Sunglasses:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Designer mens sunglasses can really add to your wardrobe and overall sense of style. There are many variables that come into play when choosing a pair that both looks and feels right on your face but I'll try to give you the quick and dirty tips you need.

1. Choose a style that looks great on your face but does not distract onlookers from how fantastic your suit, tie, and shoes look on you.

2. Wear a pair that is snug enough on your face to stay in place, yet loose enough as to not feel like your nose is being strangled.

3. Buy a pair of aviator glasses as your ace in the hole. These glasses are both fashionable and high on protection.

4. Polarized means you have protection against sun reflecting off water. Buy polarized glasses if you plan on wearing them on a boat or near an event near water. The golf course is a perfect example of a place you may be wearing a suit and yet need protection against water glare.

5. Choose a rimless or metal rimmed pair of glasses, plastic rims look cheap.

Mens Dress Shoes:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mens dress shoes come in a large variety of styles and colors. The goal of this page is to give you a quick overview of each style, when to wear each style, and what color to wear.

Before we get too detailed, you should know that each style of mens dress shoes can be broken up into two categories.

These are the slip on shoe and the lace up shoe. Lace up shoes can be tied in a balmoral style and a blutcher style. Blutchers are open faced and balmoral are V type lacing.

Color Coordinating
Black - The black shoe is the most versatile and can go with virtually any color suit you have.

Brown/Burgandy - Most suits will also accept this color with the exception of a black suit. The darker the shade the more formal the shoe.

Mens Shoe Styles
Brogues - A brogue is a pattern created by punching holes into the shoe. Brogues can be half brogue, full brogue, or medallion brogue. The first two are self explanatory and the last is when the brogue pattern is all around the toe of the shoe.

Buck Oxfords - A buck oxford is a more casual shoe which is not made from the traditional leather. Wear this on casual Friday or to a dress down occasion.

Cap-Toe Oxfords - Cap-toe Oxfords are dress shoes with a toe that is sectioned off with a separate leather portion. These shoes are dressy enough for the office but not for a formal occasion.

Chukkas - Chukkas are dress boots used in both formal and informal situations.

Monk Straps - Monk straps have a single strap at the top instead of laces. These shoes are great for casual wear and the office but not for formal occasions.

Penny Loafers - Penny loafers are slip on shoes that can be worn casually and possibly to the office. The defining attribute on these shoes is the slit at the instep.

Plain Loafers - Plain loafers are another for of slip on shoe with no defining features whatsoever. The leather will dictate how formal this shoe is.

Side Gusset - The side gusset is a slip on shoe with elastic sides for a nice snug fit. These shoes can be worn to any occasion.

Split-Toe Oxfords - Split-toe Oxfords are a bulky shoe with stitching at the center. These are nice shoes for office wear.

Tassle Loafers - Tassle loafers are slip on loafers with dangling leather florets.

Wing Tips - Wing tips are mens dress shoes with a brogue wing patters on the toe. These shoes are great for casual wear and business wear. Do not wear these in strict formal occasions.

A poorly put together outfit can make even the most expensive suit look terrible. Conversely a person can take a suit that cost them next to nothing and make it look fabulous.

Mens Dress Shirts:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The main characteristic of mens dress shirts is that they are either cotton, polyester, or some sort of cotton polyester mix. After that the only thing you need to worry about is the size, style, and color of the shirt. Lets take a further look below.

Fabric Attributes

Cotton - most breathable, most expensive, *most expensive and professional looking*, easily wrinkled

*(note that because this shirt wrinkles so easy it may look less professional by the end of the day)

Polyester - soft, shiny, not easily wrinkled, least expensive, least professional looking

Cotton/Polyester Mix - These shirts are also known as wrinkle free shirts and are most likely going to be the staple of your dress shirt wardrobe.

Shirt Styles

Styles can vary greatly in dress shirts. A shirt can have button up collars or flat collars. It can be slim fit or regular fit, and it can come in many different colors.

Some rules to remember:

1. Lined shirts look more professional the closer the lines.

2. Always choose a color that goes well with your suit color.

3. White is always a safe color to wear.

How To Tie A Tie

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This page will tell you how to tie a tie. The particular method we are going to use is called the Windsor Knot. This will produce a wide triangular knot, which is in fact, named after King Edward VII.

So let's start by selecting a tie. The tie will be placed inside the collar of your button down shirt. Standing in front of a mirror, place the tie with the big end on the right side, approximately 12 inches below the small end.

Now, cross the big end over the smaller end, bringing the big end up through loop between your collar and your tie and bringing the big end back down. Pull the big end underneath the small end and to the right, once again back through the loop, to the right again which will now make the big end inside out.

Now, bring the big end across the front of your shirt from right to left. Pull the big end once again through the loop, bringing the big end down through the knot in front.

Finally, using both hands, tighten the knot carefully and draw it up to the collar. Viola! You have just tied your first Windsor Knot!

Mens Neckties:

Every man will one day have to put on the dreaded tie. However, mens neckties really don't have to be dreaded at all. These little pieces of silk can really compliment your wardrobe.

The tie isn't hard to pick out but you should follow a few rules.

1. When tied, the tip of the tie should hang down to the top of your pants.

2. Take a look in the mirror when your done.

3. Always buy silk ties - anything else will look cheap.

4. When in doubt buy the more conservative looking tie.

5. Get a color that goes with both the shirt and the suit.

6. If you have an expensive suit on you will look better with a completely solid tie.

7. Don't buy a tie without a particular shirt and suit in mind. Not all good ties will look nice with just anything.

Suit care should be on the top of your to do list once you purchase your suit. Some things to consider are: dry cleaning, tailoring, storage and moth protection.

How to Steam Clean a Suit

Learning how to steam clean a suit is essential to getting rid of nasty wrinkles while still maintaining the longevity of the suit. Steam cleaning a suit will eliminate all wrinkles and take some unpleasant odors out of it as well.

What you will need:

1. Your suit.

2. A good open place to hang or lay your suit. This can be achieved through clever hanging, a garment rack, or a nice clean table.

3. A steam cleaner. These can be purchased online for less than a hundred dollars and can save you much more than that over the lifetime of your suit.

Instructions:

1. Lay your suit out flat on a table or hang it up in an open space.

2. Fill up your steam cleaners tank and plug the cleaner in.

3. While waiting for the tank to heat up, brush the suit off making it devoid of any lint or hair.

4. Use the nozzle of your cleaner to shoot steam at your suit from several inches away.

Be careful not to let the suit get too moist.

5. Use one hand to hold the suit still while using the other hand to do long even strokes with the nozzle.

Repeat this process until the wrinkles have completely fallen away from your suit.

How to Iron a Shirt

Learn how to iron a shirt, and your life will become much easier. This skill can save you from having to pay out money for dry cleaning and will have you looking sharp.

Ironing a shirt is not that hard to do but there are a few tips that will help you along the way.

Things you will need:

1. Ironing Board - I prefer the large version that stands above my waist. This is much better than its smaller counterpart for in home use. Buy the smaller one only if you plan on packing it up for frequent travel.

2. The Iron - Look for one that has a button to shoot both water and steam out of it. This will save you from having to get a spray bottle and possibly a steam cleaner.

How to Iron a Shirt:

1. Set up your ironing board in a place where it cannot fall over.

2. Fill your iron up with cold water.

3. Set the iron to the temperature your shirt has specified.

4. Plug the iron into an outlet and stand it up on your ironing board.

5. Spread your shirt out on the ironing board using natural creases in the shirt to section pieces off.

6. Spray the shirt lightly with water using your iron.

7. Place the hot part of the iron onto the shirt and begin to move it vertically up and down the shirt in smooth strokes.

Be sure not to leave the iron on any one place of the shirt for more than a few seconds or it will start to burn and ruin your shirt.

8. Immediately place the shirt on a hanger when finished.

Suit care should be on the top of your to do list once you purchase your suit. Some things to consider are: dry cleaning, tailoring, storage and moth protection.

How to Clean a Tie:

Knowing how to clean a tie is pivotal to your suit wearing success. The necktie seems to get dirty quicker than any other garment a man can wear. Ironically its also the hardest garment to treat for stains.

Prevention

1. Treat with a stain resistant spray. These work kind of like rainex does on your windshield.

2. Take it off as soon as you don't need to wear it anymore. Don't come home from work and decide to eat dinner with your neck-piece on - why take unnecessary risks?

3. Store it as carefully as you store your suit.

The Aftermath

1. Attack the stain immediately with stain remover. Do not use water as it will just make things worse.

2. Blot the stain rather than wipe. You will spread the stain if you wipe.

3. If all else fails - get it dry cleaned.

Suit care should be on the top of your to do list once you purchase your suit. Some things to consider are: dry cleaning, tailoring, storage and moth protection.

Why?

Finding Good Dry Cleaners

Good dry cleaners can really make a mans life easy. Being able to toss your suit on without having to worry about whether or not it was done correctly takes some of the daily stress away. Besides, we have enough to worry about don't we?

Quick Tips

1. Use word of mouth to find a cleaning establishment in your area. Asking somebody if they know a superior professional isn't very hard to do and you may even make a new friend.

2. Check to see if the business is certified. A certified organization has employees that have been professionally trained.

3. Shop around until you find somebody that will give you a nice crease at a reasonable price. The industry is very competitive and you don't have to accept poor service.

Suit care should be on the top of your to do list once you purchase your suit. Some things to consider are: dry cleaning, tailoring, storage and moth protection.

Why?

Suit Alterations

Suit alterations are great for both the shrinking and expanding man. A good tailor can save you hundreds of dollars on a new suit for a mere fraction of the price.

However, you should know when its appropriate to repair your clothes and when you should throw in the towel.

Areas that can be tailored elegantly are:

1. Waist - The waist can be taken in aggressively to make the pants more snug. Expanding the waist is limited to how much excess material is in the pants. You can tell how much you have by looking inside the back of the pants.

2. Legs - The legs are like the waist in that they can be shortened by great lengths but are limited in the amount you can lengthen them.

Jackets can be let out at the waist and shortened at the sleeves but be careful to get a good tailor if you decide to do anything else.

Suit care should be on the top of your to do list once you purchase your suit. Some things to consider are: dry cleaning, tailoring, storage and moth protection.

Why?

Suit Storage

Suit storage is a necessary piece of the suit care puzzle. Storing your dress clothes in a haphazardly manner can cause you a lot of pain when you go to wear them.

Suits need to be properly cleaned and pressed after use. Hang them in a manner that keeps them from acquiring any new wrinkles in between uses.

Cedar closets are the ideal place to hang your suits but a normal closet out of direct sunlight is a fitting alternative.

Traveling with a suit can be a bit trickier. When traveling you will want to keep your suit as wrinkle free as possible - you never know if your destination will have a good local tailor.

Use a garment bag to protect your suits and dress shirts during travel. These bags are relatively inexpensive and can hold a suit in hanging position quite easily.

Suit Care

"Respect yourself and your possessions."

- Sylvia Black

Suit care should be on the top of your to do list once you purchase your suit. Some things to consider are: dry cleaning, tailoring, storage and moth protection.

Why?

Moth Protection - It would be a great tragedy if you wore a $1,000.00 suit once and then found it had been eaten by moths the second time you went to wear it.

The Art of Moth Protection:

Moth protection is a must for anybody keeping suits in their house. These little insects can cause big problems in a matter of seconds. Unless you plan on keeping an eye on all your suits at all times you should take measures to protect them.

The biggest enemy to the moth besides your fly swatter and array of poisons is cedar. These bugs despise the pleasant smell of cedar and will not go near it. A cedar closet is the ideal body guard for your clothes. However, cedar hangers are much more affordable, portable, and financially viable.

A note of caution when using cedar wood is that it will eventually start to lose potency. The quick and easy solution is to just take some sand paper to the wood and unlock the magic again. If you don't like to sand you can always buy cedar spray to liven things up again as well.

How to Wear a Suit

Knowing how to wear a suit is a pivotal skill for almost any man. Wearing a suit is a simple task once you know what you're doing. This page is will teach you everything you need to know - suit wear will never be easier after you have read this page.

Starting at the top, the first thing you need to know is how the collar should look. Collars should fit so that a quarter inch of your dress shirt is showing while standing. This will ensure that your dress shirt is not engulfed when you sit down.

Shoulder pads should have your shoulders gently sloping down in a natural way. Men with large shoulders will need less padding than men with narrow shoulders.

Armholes on the jacket should be high enough that you can raise your arms over your head without having the jacket dramatically ride up on your face.

Sleeves should be short to the point that a half inch of your dress shirt sleeves are showing, but not more.

The bottom button should never be buttoned - even when standing. Leaving this button fastened will lead to it ripping off when you sit down.

Pants should sit at the waist rather than the hips and should fit nicely at the crotch without too much extra room.

Pant legs should flow smoothly down the legs without any bulges. Thin men may have to get the legs taken in while larger athletic men may have to have pants specially made.

The bottom of the pant legs should rest gently at the top of the dress shoes with a small break.

How to wear a suit in Europe - men who like to wear their pant legs slightly higher can opt for the European look and wear their pants without any break at the bottom.

This is an ideal method to use when browsing through an estate sale, yard sale, or other store in which there are no dressing rooms.

Another application for this method would be for the person trying to measure a suit to sell online. For example, if you bought a suit or have an old suit without size tags, you could use this page to tell you how to get proper measurements to list.

What you will need...

Grab a yardstick or cloth measuring tape and your suit.

Have them....great....lets get started.

Place the suit on flat level ground or on a hanger - your choice.

Upper Body

The Shoulders - Take your stick and place it at the line where the sleeve meets the body and measure to where the body meets the sleeve on the other side.

The Chest - Place your stick just below the armpits and measure across.

The Waist - Put your stick all the way at the bottom of the suit and measure laterally.

Length from nape of neck - Flip your suit over. Place the stick just below the collar and measure down vertically.

Sleeves - Measure down vertically from sleeve top to bottom.

Lower Body

Waist - Just measure left to right at the very top of the suit. (where the belt would go)

Inseam - Measure from the inside of the pants,(starting at the crotch), and measure straight down.

Mens Suit Styles

"Class is a relative term."

- Max Pheats

Mens Suit Styles are not all that complicated. The main thing you really need to know is that there are four main styles. Everything else is just a hodgepodge of the 4 mixed up so you can't tell. We have American suits,English suits, Mandarin suits, and the Italian suit.

The Italian style is a double breasted suit and is usually a good choice for very tall men.

The British style is single breasted and gives off a more regal look than its counterparts.

The American style is the most relaxed of the four and gives off a younger image.

The Mandarin suit is the most unique of the four as it is influenced by more traditional eastern cultures.

Which style you choose is really a matter of preference. One has to consider his body type, personal style, and where he plans to wear the suit.

Click through to the various styles to get a more in-depth look at what these suits are about.

Knowing what you are looking for will put you in a better buying position and reduce the feeling of helplessness that many people get when spending large amounts of money on something they really know almost nothing about.
