WWAMM FASHIONS-MENS SUITS

WWAMM FASHIONS- MENS SUITS is your exclusive online mens fashions store. This article was taken from theguidetomenssuits.com.

Now that you have your measurements take a look at some of the different parts of suit styles.

Mens Suit Styles

"Class is a relative term."

- Max Pheats

Mens Suit Styles are not all that complicated. The main thing you really need to know is that there are four main styles. Everything else is just a hodgepodge of the 4 mixed up so you can't tell. We have American suits,English suits, Mandarin suits, and the Italian suit.

The Italian style is a double breasted suit and is usually a good choice for very tall men.

The British style is single breasted and gives off a more regal look than its counterparts.

The American style is the most relaxed of the four and gives off a younger image.

The Mandarin suit is the most unique of the four as it is influenced by more traditional eastern cultures.

Which style you choose is really a matter of preference. One has to consider his body type, personal style, and where he plans to wear the suit.

Click through to the various styles to get a more in-depth look at what these suits are about.

Knowing what you are looking for will put you in a better buying position and reduce the feeling of helplessness that many people get when spending large amounts of money on something they really know almost nothing about.

Now that you have your measurements take a look at some of the different parts of a suit, suit patterns, and suit styles.

Suit Patterns

Suit patterns are just as important as suit style, fit and color. There are four main suit designs to consider: solid, pinstripe, windowpane, and check patterns.

Solid

Solid Suit are suits that consist of one color with no built in patterns. These suits must differentiate themselves with pocket, button, lapel, and vent style. They are neutral and safe for all situations.

Pinstripe

Pinstripe suits have vertical lines of color evenly spaced throughout the suit. These stripes of color can vary in thickness depending on the designers vision. Pinstripes give the wearer a more authoritative look.

Window Pane

Window pane suits have either a square or rectangular pattern throughout the suit. This is created with the use of widely spaced horizontal and vertical stripes. These suits are more stylish than the previous models.

Plaid

The plaid suit is a type of check patterned suit with a higher cost due to its type of material and tailoring.

Check Patterns

The check patterned suit is similar to the window pane suit with one exception. This suit has every other square or rectangle filled with horizontal lines. Wear this suit as one of your more trendy stylish versions.

Now that you have your measurements take a look at some of the different parts of a suit, suit patterns, and suit styles.

Parts of a Suit

So many different parts of a suit make buying them a daunting task. This page will go over all the different suit parts you will ever need to know about.

Collars

The suit collar is the part of the suit around the neck which overlaps the shoulders.

Lapels

The lapel is the part of the collar which extends down the chest. Suit lapels are generally three to four inches, but vary between suit designers.

Gorges

The gorge is the part where the collars meet the lapels. Higher gorges make a man look longer, while shorter gorges can make a man look thicker.

Pockets

Jacket pockets can be flap, slit, and besom. Flap pockets provide additional material to cover the opening of the pocket. Slit pockets do not have anything covering the opening. Besom pockets have welts at both the top and bottom and add extra detail.

Vents

Vents are vertical slit opening on the back of the jacket. They can be found in both single vent versions and double vent versions. Also a suit can be made without any vents. The advantage of having vents is to allow for more mobility and flexibility in the suit.

Pleats

Pleats are parts of a suit that crease at the front of the suit pants. Suits can be pleated, double pleated, or flat front.

Cuffs

Cuffs are the pieces of suit material sewn to overlap at the bottom of the pants. They are usually about an inch and a half. A good rule to follow is that pleated pants have cuffs and flat front pants do not.

Slim Suits

Slim suits shouldn't be worn by everybody. However, if you've checked your measurements or feel you fall into one of the two categories below then you've come to the right place.

These suits are for you if.....

1. Your an ectomorph

2. You work out so much that your waist size is in the low 30's and your chest size is over 40.

If you fall into the first category you probably want to look into either a vintage suit or a suit that is styled after the versace or ralph lauren suit models.

The second category demands a suit style that hugs your waist but gives you room to breath up top. Calvin Klein has a large selection of suit models that fall into this category

Big and Tall Mens Suits:

You need to buy big and tall mens suits if you....

1. Know your measurements and know that you need one.(easy enough)

2. Have the body type of an endomorph.

Most designers make their garments with multiple plus size versions. The problem many larger men have is finding someplace that has what they are looking for at a reasonable price.

Buying Tips

The first place one should look is online. A person can find all types of suits in various sizes online with just a few clicks.

The only other option is to search for a store in your area.

How to Buy a Suit

How to buy a suit, is the question of the day for many men trying to purchase a suit for the first time. Of course it really isn't that hard to go to the store, give them your credit card and leave with a suit. However, I'm sure anybody spending hundreds of dollars would like to know what he's buying first.

One of the main points of this website is to make you an informed buyer. This section along with, how to wear a suit, should give you all you need to make a proper purchase.

Lets get started.

The first thing you absolutely need to do is to get your suit measurements.

Suit Measurements

Taking good suit measurements is vital to getting a suit that fits. Going to a local store can be a good starting place if your willing to listen to a sales pitch. However, if you want to save yourself a trip to the store, and I know you do, then you've come to the right place.

Items you will need:

1. 1 cloth measuring tape.
2. 1 competent friend.
3. 1 sheet of paper
4. 1 pen

I imagine you have all of these instruments with the exception of the cloth measuring tape. The best thing to do about this is to have the friend that you call to come over and help you pick one up on his/her way over. These can be purchased at places like Wal-Mart for a few dollars, so you shouldn't have too much trouble.

Steps to getting your suit measurements:

Jacket - Put your arms out to your sides and have your partner wrap the tape around your chest, just over top the nipples. Make sure that the inches side is facing out. The number you get here is your jacket size. Write it down. Next you will want to get your sleeve size by measuring from yo

Pants - Wrap the tape around your waist, making sure you have the inches side facing out. This is your waist measurement. Next take the tape from your crotch all the way down to your ankle. The number you get here is known as your inseam.

If you feel uncomfortable with somebody around your crotch you can always measure from your waist down to your ankles and subtract 11 inches.

While you have somebody over you might as well get your shirt measurements.

Shirt - Start by measuring the circumference of your neck. This number will determine what shirt collar you will buy. Next you will want to get your sleeve size by measuring from your shoulder to about a quarter inch past your wrist. The reason for this is because you want part of your shirt to show when you have your suit jacket on.

The last thing you need to do is pay your friend back for buying the cloth tape measurer. Getting your suit measurements has never been easier.

Getting measured will tell you whether or not you need to check out slim suits or big and tall mens suits.

After you have your measurements come back to this page and we'll take it to the next level.

Now that you have your measurements take a look at some of the different parts of a suit, suit patterns, and suit styles.

Now that you know how to buy a suit, the only places left to go before we go shopping are measuring the suit and how to wear a suit. This page will help you out greatly if you plan on buying a suit at a consignment shop or a yard sale.

If you plan to buy your suit online or at a store then you can disregard this and go straight to the shopping for suits section. This section will give you tips on what to do when your in the store or searching online.

Gangster Shoes

Gangster shoes will define your costume and add to your suit much better than your regular suit footwear. Styling for these types does not vary to any great degree which makes it easy to choose.

Color should be the primary concern when making your selection.

Variations

1. Solid - Buy this style if you want to keep the attention off of your footwear and onto the rest of your outfit. Choose a color that matches your suit.

2. Two Toned - These consist of a white portion with the rest being another color. Make sure the alternate color matches your outfit.

Gangster Hats

Gangster hats so much more than keep the sun out of your eyes. These headpieces make your costume suit look complete.

There are a few styles to choose from so pick carefully.

Styles

1. Fedora - The fedora has a narrow brim and a medium sized top with a band around it. These are more suited for women but men can wear them as well.

2. Flocked - The flocked headpiece has strategic indents around it to give it somewhat of a crumpled look. Do not wear this with a white suit.

3. Godfather - The godfather is like the fedora but has a much larger canoe like indent at the top to make it look more masculine.

Quick Tips

1. Wear a color that matches your suit.

2. Choose a style that fits your head well.

3. Buy one in a felt or wool material rather than plastic. It won't cost you that much more and your costume will look better.

Gangster Suits

Gangster suits can be just as popular a costume as pimp suits. These suits can be designed at home by taking your most formal looking pinstripe suit and mixing up the accessories on it.

Steps to transform your current suit:

1. Put a gangster hat on.

2. Replace the shoes with a nice pair of white dress shoes.

3. Loosen the tie or lose it completely.

4. Take off the top button on your dress shirt.

5. Wear extremely gaudy watches and rings.

Characteristics

1. Size - Large and Wide in diameter.

2. Shape - Round

3. Material - Felt

Quick Tips for Purchasing

1. Buy one with a feather in it to clearly distinguish yourself.

2. Match the color to the color of your suit.

Pimp Suits

Before there was pimp juice there were pimp suits. This suit has got to be the most hilarious one of them all. Just try and look at a picture of an old pimp without laughing.

Amusingly enough it is usually just a nice business suit with a shocking array of accessories. Throw on a wide brimmed hat with a pink feather in it before your next party and you have an instant costume.

The wide brimmed hats, large watches, massive medallions, and gold rings are what make this suit what it is.

Church Shoes

Church shoes should go well with your church suits with little exception. However mild color variations are acceptable and encouraged.

A white suit with brown footwear or a black suit with burgundy footwear can really make things interesting. The key thing to remember is that your church suit is not your business suit.

Quick Tips

1. Don't wear sneakers unless you have bad feet.

2. Shine and polish shoes that need to be shined.

3. Don't buy shoes that need to be shined if you don't like doing it.

4. Wear a pair that accents your suit and you can't go wrong.

5. When in doubt stick to the accessories guide.

Church Shirts:

Church shirts can vary depending on your denomination, but I'll make sure I cover the basics. The presence of a church suit usually calls for a button down garment, but not all would agree.

Two Options

1. Wear something traditional with a tie or without a tie. This can have button down collars or open collars - just make sure you button them if you have them.

2. Another option is to wear a polo or tee. Many younger parishioners like to wear clothing with cute slogans.

These could be worn underneath the suit jacket and give the suit a more relaxed look and feel to it. Although I'm not a big fan of this look, (why where a suit at all), it probably would be comfortable to some.

The Church Tie

The church tie doesn't have to be formal at all. Some rules do apply however so keep reading.

Quick Tips

1. Color Coordinate - Wear a neck piece that matches both your shirt and your suit.

2. Size Appropriately - The tip of the tie should end just where your pants start.

3. Wear a Windsor - These knots aren't always viable for the office so wear one now while you can.

4. Do not wear one with a large Jesus on a cross. - These are tasteless and many will be offended.

5. Stay away from cheap materials. - Just because its the weekend doesn't mean you should wear felt around your neck.

Mens Church Suits

"Well Dressed and Well Blessed"

- Ryan Shaw

Mens church suits haven't completely gone out of style and never will. The days of the entire family getting formally dressed up and going to church together are long gone for some, but not for all.

These days most of the typical churches have a combination of suited up and non-suited people attending their worship services. Since the church suits usually include accessories, we will cover each of them separately.

Church Hats

Worn properly church hats can make nice additions to your suits. These hats should be conservatively stylish and functional.

Style

Different religions have more liberties than others so take this advice as a grain of salt. Stay away from anything overly flashy. Indiana Jones and Humfrey Bogart head pieces should be saved for other attires. Wear something with a medium size brim - keep it both functional and stylish.

Material

Expensive materials are not necessary, but stay away from plastics and anything glossy.

Color

Try and match the color to the suit you are wearing. Keep in mind accessories while constructing your outfit.

Price

Prices can vary dramatically. Decide on a budget before you go shopping and shop around until you get what you're looking for. A good starting point is around $50.00.

The Zoot Suit

When looking at the zoot suit you'll find wide lapels, high waists, and baggy trousers are all signatures of the this suit. These suits are predominately worn by the Latino community. Therefore they have always been much more prevalent in the southwest. However, you may see them in big northeastern cities like New York and Philadelphia.

I've always found these suits to be more comical than classy but they do appear to be comfortable. You won't find too many people wearing these suits in the boardroom on any normal day. You may however see a person out on the town wearing one so try not to laugh.

Leisure Suits

Leisure suits still haven't quite caught on yet; however, you can get a hold of one pretty easily if you put your mind to it. These suits are yet another product of the 70's and their fight for non-conformity.

The general populace was looking for something to wear to work that wouldn't feel like the formal work uniform of the business suit. I think they were missing the entire point of the suit when they came up with this one but thats another story.

Quick Facts:

1. Materials and colors vary widely but polyester ranks high.

2. Prices on these vintage pieces are higher now than they were when they were new.

3. Practical uses for this type of suit don't really exist any more, but it doesn't make them any less comfortable.

The Disco Suit

The disco suit was yet another invention of the 1970's. This type of suit came in all types of colors and patterns ranging anywhere from solid bright orange to window pane baby blue.

Materials were always polyester and cuts were usually slim. Two buttons were typical of this suit, probably to expose a maximum amount of chest hair. Lapels were large and in charge and sometimes nearly doubled the usual sized lapels.

Accessories ranged anywhere from platform shoes to roller skates. Dress shirts were worn underneath but they had obnoxious wide collars and were worn with a few buttons undone for maximum sexiness.

1970s Style Suits

Retro

1970s style suits are the most common vintage suits on the market. This really shouldn't be much of a surprise though since this era's style of clothing is popular in all of its forms. You won't find any vintage bowling shirts on this page though.

Style

The styles of this generation are markedly different but the basic concepts still remain. Two and three button jackets with appropriately tailored pants.

Many vintage suit wearers will pop on the 3 piece version to fully differentiate between their suit and the new age style suits. Main differences are wider lapels and slim stream lined waists.

Colors

Colors range from traditional black and navy blue to anything you might find on the color spectrum.

Bright and interesting colors were the flavor for this decade so don't be afraid to shop around until you find the color that most suits you.

Materials

Suits can be found in wool in any decade and the 70's are no exception. However, polyester suits made a big splash in this era and dominated many of the clothing found in this era.

Conclusion

Prices can be quite low on these sites but be willing to spend a few extra dollars to buy from an established seller.

Sharkskin Suits

Sharkskin suits were a staple of the 1960's fashion. These suits have a certain shine to them that makes them much more appealing to vintage suit lovers. The 1980's retro suits are comparable to the amateur, but a die hard can spot the difference right away.

This type of suit has become increasingly hard to get. Almost 50 years is a long time for clothing to hold up well, even if you take care of it. These suits can occasionally be found at estate sales, yard sales, consignment shops, specialty shops, and online retailers. If you happen to find one of these suits at a bargain - buy it immediately.

"Elegance is defined by style."

- Paul San Olay

Vintage Suits are much more than a work uniform. The modern style suit may be a staple among business men and fashion acolytes alike, but the retro suit however, has a unique cut that really accentuates a persons individual character.

These suits usually consist of 3 pieces: the trousers, jacket, and vest. They can be found in many different colors and patterns, but will traditionally be made up of the same 2 materials.(wool or polyester)

Sharkskin Suits were a staple of the 1960's. These suits have a rare quality to them that many newer suits do not.

1970's style suits were the first suits to use cheap polyester materials. However, you can find many more throw backs in a high quality wool than you can in polyester.

Disco suits went out of style about the same time disco did. They are 1970's suits but should be explored by themselves.

Leisure suits didn't last long at all, but I've written a quick history lesson on them.

Zoot suits were another popular style that didn't quite make it. They are now used as costume suits which has created a nice zoot suit rental market.

The Blue Blazer

The true staple of any man’s wardrobe is a blue blazer. This article of clothing is so versatile that it is inconceivable that the investment would not be worthwhile. You could literally make hundreds of outfits out of this one article of clothing. Below would be the top three types of looks that can be created just from the pairing of the blazer with other clothing.

The Dressy Occasion. Let’s say that you are going to a day wedding or perhaps out to a fancier restaurant for dinner, you could put this piece with a pair of khaki pants, a button down shirt and a cool tie. If you arrive at the restaurant and the dress code is more lax, you could always remove the tie but, especially in cases where you are unsure of the attire/dress code, this outfit is always a good bet.

Meeting the Folks. Let’s say you are going to meet your girlfriends parents or even your future in laws at their house for a “relaxed” dinner. While a button down and khaki pants look nice, they give the impression that you only half tried. If you put the blazer over that outfit sans tie, then the impression is that you care enough to add a little special touch. Additionally, as the dinner wears on and everyone becomes more casual with each other, you can remove your jacket.

A Night on the Town. For most women, nothing is sexier than a man in jeans with blazer. It just gives them a look that says, “I’m professional but I can relax.” Besides, on a cold night, you could really impress the girl by giving her your coat.

Sport Coats

To the naked eye, people may mistake sport coats for suit jackets but in the end they are both completely different. Because of an odd jackets ability to be used as casual attire, it is usually made out of silk or different types of tweed.

Suit jackets also tend to have multiple patterns; chalk stripe and window pane. If a suit jacket is worn as a substitute to an odd jacket, you must generally wear the matching pants in order to not look foolish or improper. A sports coat has the wonderful ability of being able to mesh well with any other clothing attire you wish to wear.

What’s also nice is the fact that suit jackets tend to have plastic buttons to compliment the intriguing patterns used, while odd jackets tend to use nickel or brass buttons. The restriction on your body movement is also relived and enabling you to do more than board meetings and important desk work.

Business Casual

The term business casual describes a style of dress that is more relaxed than formal business wear. Specifically, it denotes dressing in a manner that is casual, but still appropriate for a business setting. For lawyers or businessmen, for example, a casual outfit could be khaki pants and a button down shirt, as opposed to a full suit and tie. Some companies institute weekly or bi-weekly “Casual Fridays,” on which employees may dress more casually than usual.

In this technological age, however, casual dress is becoming more common. Because businesses and workers communicate more now through email, faxes, and conference calls, strict business dress is becoming something of an antiquated notion.

Even Barack Obama has brought a more casual style to the White House. Whereas previous presidents, notably George W. Bush, were very strict about requiring full business dress during all presidential meetings, Obama implemented a “jacket optional” policy shortly after his inauguration. As Obama has graced magazine covers from News Week to GQ, his casual approach to business seems likely to spread. Even hugely successful business men like Warren Buffet and Bill Gates often appear on television in casual dress. Prepare your wardrobe accordingly.

Buying a Suit

Buying a suit really isn't as tough as it may seem....however, there are a few questions you need to ask yourself first.

What are other successful people in the office wearing?

Take note of the styles and colors that your successful, I repeat, successful co-goers in the office are wearing.

It might seem great that Sean looks super comfortable in his baby blue polyester suit, but comfort isn't everything. The fact that you're more comfortable than your coworkers doesn't mean you'll get a raise quicker.

The culture of your company can and will dictate what you should wear, but remember its always better to be overdressed than under.

Where did they get their suits?

This is a simple question and can be easily answered by even the busiest of your co-workers. Ask and ye shall receive.

Now that you are armed with this information check out how to buy a suit for specific instructions on what to do.

The Office Suit

Every man needs a well tailored office suit. The world we live in today requires us to go above and beyond to stand out from the competition. You need to show that you are on top of your game and that you take your job seriously. Wearing a suit that came from a department store will not always flatter you nor get you recognized as being an individual.

Even though you may consider the suit just a piece of clothing it can actually define the type of person you are. You want to look your best, and certainly better than others when you are applying for a new job. Maybe you have a special meeting or lunch date with an important client. Your suit, unknowingly can tell a person a lot about you and how you see yourself.

Wearing a made to measure or custom tailored suit is the best way to ensure that your suit will fit properly. However, if you must buy an off the rack suit, make sure you bring it to your tailor to get it in shape.

The Work Suit

It seems that the work suit is making a comeback. This is very exciting because people look so great in suits no matter what their height, weight or style. The most important thing to remember is that you are going to be wearing this suit for eight to nine hours so make it comfortable.

Comfort does not negate style though. Slacks should have a flat panel front, pleats, or double pleats. Pleats tend to be more comfortable, but not quite as attractive to look at. This can be negated by wearing pleats and keeping your jacket on all day if you must. However, when you are working all day it is doubtful that you will want to keep your jacket on at all times.

Depending on your position in the company and your aspirations, your suits do not have to be extremely pricey. Always keep in mind however that you are always judged by how you look as well as how well you perform. One option is to invest in one really good suit for business meetings and keep it simple the rest of the time.

Try pairing your work suits with unique ties to break the monotony of your outfit. Ties with different pocket squares can play up a suit and make the same suit look like a different one every day. Also remember that you do not have to wash your suit jackets every day. Since you wear a shirt under the jacket they stay relatively clean. Just hang it up to air it out at the end of the night, and take the jacket off when you eat so that you don’t get any food on it.
